The Mercer Island volleyball team officially clinched the 3A KingCo title on Friday with a 3-0 victory against Juanita High School. It was the team’s second consecutive league championship.
“It feels really good to win back-to-back titles,” said Islander coach Dino Annest. “It helps with momentum going into the playoffs but you still have to win and stay focused.”
Mercer Island is undefeated at 10-0 in league play and 13-0 overall. The Islanders have not lost a match to an in-league opponent since the 2006 season.
The Islanders dominated the Rebels during the first game with a score of 25-15. Juanita played Mercer Island tough during the second game but lost again by the same score. The third and final game was not much better for the north-end team, completing the sweep 25-17. Ariel Dewey picked up 25 more assists for the season, while good defensive play led to 12 digs each for Islander teammates Chelsea Jurkovich and Janelle Chow. Chow also finished with six aces.
Mercer Island played at Sammamish High School on Monday (after Reporter deadline) and could attempt to complete its second consecutive undefeated in-league schedule tonight, when the team hosts Interlake at 7 p.m.
