A vehicle rolled onto its passenger side in a ravine along West Mercer Way on Dec. 12. The accident happened at night when the vehicle, a Subaru Forester, was heading southbound on 78th Avenue S.E. in the 4100 block and slid across West Mercer Way. The driver, a 25-year-old Mercer Island woman, was transported to Overlake Hospital with one male passenger. Another passenger, a 24-year-old woman, was seriously injured, was taken to Harborview and had surgery. The driver had likely consumed alcohol, and a police investigation for DUI is in process. One count of vehicular assault was named in the police report. Vehicular assault is a class B felony charge for reckless driving, under the influence of liquor or drugs, that causes bodily harm.
Dec. 2
Fraud: A Mercer Island man, 44, residing on S.E. 24th Street reported fraudulent charges made on his checking account at 2:48 p.m. The fraud occurred after Nov. 18, and the man closed the account.
Dec. 3
Stolen beer: A teenage boy stole a six-pack of beer from the South end QFC in the 8400 block of S.E. 68th Street at 9:15 p.m. The checker, who reported the theft, saw the teenager leave in a white Toyota Camry with two girls and could not see the license plate number. The total loss was $5.79.
Dec. 4
DUI: Police stopped a vehicle, a Land Rover, speeding at 50 mph in a 30 mph zone at 2:20 a.m. on North Mercer Way. The driver, a 29-year-old Mukilteo man, was arrested in the 5000 block of westbound I-90 for DUI, with one count of speeding 20 mph over the limit, and one count of failing to stop or yield at an intersection.
Accident: A vehicle spun out of control on frost and ice in the 2800 block of 75th Place S.E. at 7:55 a.m. The vehicle, a Nissan pickup driven by a 64-year-old Mercer Island man, rammed into a parked vehicle, then spun around and slid backward into a second vehicle before coming to a stop against a fire hydrant.
Drugs: Police found two grams of marijuana with a glass pipe inside a Redmond man’s vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, after stopping him on the on-ramp to eastbound I-90 at Island Crest Way at 7:56 p.m. The man, 26, was stopped for driving with a suspended license after a DOL check and was arrested. He was released to his father after being processed at the MIPD.
Liquor violation: Police found two intoxicated teenagers, a male and female, in the back of the school grounds during a Mercer Island High School dance at 9:11 p.m. Both teenagers were released to their parents.
Dec. 5
Theft at gift shop: Items were stolen from Finders on S.E. 27th Street during open business hours on Dec. 4. The shop owner reported the theft at 10:03 a.m. Stolen items included a “Travel in Italy” book, a royal blue knitted beret, a necklace with gold links and pearls, and a large black Baggallini purse. There are no suspects in the case.
Dec. 6
Malicious mischief: Graffiti was sprayed on a new cedar fence in the 4000 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. near Mercer Island High School sometime during the weekend.
Malicious mischief: The tires of a vehicle were flattened in the 3000 block of Island Crest Way 20. They were either slashed “in some manner” or the air was let out. The vehicle, a Pontiac, belonged to an East Shorewood Drive resident who had parked it behind her apartment complex. She reported the damage at 8:26 a.m., and it likely occurred sometime on Dec. 3 or Dec. 4.
Theft at high school: A 15-year-old MIHS student reported two incidents of theft at the high school at 8:35 a.m. Her backpack, which contained an iPod, camera, wallet, credit card and cash, was stolen on Dec. 1, and her cell phone was stolen on Dec. 3 from underneath her desk.
Stolen package: A package worth $200 was stolen from the porch of a residence in the 7400 block of West Mercer Way after being left by UPS on Nov. 30. The package contained a prepaid Samsung cell phone and accessories. Signs had been posted at the residence with a message not to leave packages if residents were not home.
Vehicle impounded: A vehicle parked in the 2400 block of 81st Avenue S.E. was impounded at 1:24 p.m., four days after police marked a tire and left a 72-hour notice.
Stolen mast: A 20-foot aluminum mast was stolen from a 70-year-old Mercer Island man’s sailboat sometime overnight in the 3700 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The sailboat was parked at the man’s residence. The mast, which read “Flying Jr.,” was attached to a 14-foot aluminum boom.
Fraud: Identity theft of over $1,000 was reported at 1:35 p.m. A Mercer Island woman, 41, discovered that an unknown suspect opened a credit card account in her name on Nov. 20. A collection agency contacted the woman regarding debt on that account.
Arrest: Police arrested a 31-year-old Eastsound man at 10:20 p.m. on a Bothell warrant for possessing drug paraphernalia in the 2800 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The man, who was likely under the influence of drugs, spit on an officer and was aggressive while being arrested after causing a disturbance in the Phoenix Palace bar.
DUI: After being refused the service of alcohol by a QFC employee, a Mercer Island man, 50, drove over a curb in the 2800 block of 78th Avenue S.E., struck a light pole and garbage receptacle, and continued driving away. The light pole was destroyed. Four witnesses at the scene gave police a description of the suspect, his license plate and vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta. Police found the suspect leaving the Albertsons parking lot without headlights or tail lights. He was arrested at 12:57 a.m. Police detected a strong odor of intoxicants on the man’s breath, and he failed standard field sobriety tests.
Dec. 7
DUI: Police arrested a Spokane man, 54, in a Mercedes-Benz at 6:02 p.m. in the 4200 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. after a traffic infraction. A strong odor of intoxicants was evident to police, but the driver denied that he had consumed alcohol and refused standard field sobriety tests. He was arrested for investigation of DUI.
Missing person: A Mercer Island man, 86, reported that his wife, also 86, was missing at 8:13 p.m. He was expecting her to pick up him at the Shell gas station around 5:30 p.m., but she didn’t arrive. The man began looking for her downtown. When he returned home, she was not there, and the vehicle was gone. He attributed the incident to his wife’s possible onset of dementia.
Hit and run: A Seattle man witnessed a vehicle, a Lexus SUV, drive away after backing into an unoccupied, parked vehicle at 5:10 p.m. at Jackson’s Shell gas station, 2903 78th Ave. S.E. The witness obtained only part of its license plate number and police found a potential license plate match, then contacted the suspected owner, who denied backing into the car. Police, however, found damage on her vehicle. The height and location of the damage did not match the other car’s damage, and police attempted to obtain video footage from the station’s surveillance camera.
Dec. 9
Arrest: A Seattle man, 40, was arrested on an outstanding Seattle warrant at 6:57 p.m. in the 2600 block of 77th Avenue S.E. A protection order was served to the man and he was given over to Seattle Police Department custody.
Stolen ladder: A 100-pound aluminum extension ladder was stolen from the side of a building in the 2800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. sometime on Dec. 6 or 7. The victim, a 66-year-old Mercer Island woman, reported at 6 p.m. that the ladder had been chained to the building and was removed after the chain and lock were cut.
Arrest: A Seattle woman, 29, was arrested on a MIPD warrant at 4:30 p.m. at the King County Jail after being released from other charges. She was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Unruly boy: A 12-year-old boy kicked out a window at the CHILD Institute and threatened staff and a driver. He was sent to Seattle Children’s Hospital for a mental health evaluation. Damage to the window was an estimated $500.
Dec. 10
Assault: Two men shattered a kitchen window as they fell through it while fighting at a residence on S.E. 36th Street at 1:26 a.m. The fight broke out over an affair involving one man’s wife, who was present at the scene.
Stolen checks: A suspect stole checks from a woman’s residence in the 8100 block of S.E. 74th Place sometime between Sept. 7 and Dec. 9. The theft was reported at 6:49 a.m. One check was fraudulently cashed for $185.
Car prowl: A Bible and exercise equipment were stolen out of an 85-year-old Mercer Island woman’s vehicle, a Honda Accord, while it was parked between 12 and 12:15 p.m. at Walgreens on S.E. 27th Street. The vehicle had been unlocked. Among the stolen items were a yoga mat and dumbbell weights.
Stolen purse: A surveillance camera recorded the theft of a 16-year-old girl’s purse and jackets from the MIHS ceramics classroom at 1 p.m. The suspect’s back was caught on video while walking out of the room with the purse in hand. The purse contained a driver’s license, credit and debit cards, and cash.
Stolen license plate: The front license plate was stolen from a Mercer Island woman’s vehicle in the 7800 block of S.E. 27th Street sometime between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10. The theft was reported at 3:46 p.m.
Arrest: Police arrested a Seattle woman, 38, at 6:11 p.m. on the on-ramp in the 7600 block of westbound I-90. She was booked into the King County Jail on a warrant with $500 amount on bail for driving with a suspended license.
Dec. 11
Window shot out: The wing window of a moving vehicle was shot out in the 7800 block of S.E. 72nd Street at 10:10 a.m. The driver, a 56-year-old Mercer Island man, was driving eastbound on S.E. 72nd Street and heard a pop before the window of his driver side rear door was shattered. He drove around the area to search for the suspect and contacted a police officer in a nearby block.
Dec. 12
Arrest: Police went to a suspect’s residence in the 2400 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. after finding a felony warrant through a DOL check. The suspect, a 23-year-old man, was arrested at 5:08 p.m. after the warrant was confirmed. The amount of bail on the warrant was $1,500, and the suspect was booked into the King County Jail.
Dec. 13
Malicious mischief: Graffiti with profanity directed at the MIPD was spraypainted onto the walls inside the Mercerdale Park men’s restroom sometime over the weekend. It was reported at 8:26 a.m. by a 40-year-old Mercer Island man.
