A Mercer Island Walgreens manager pocketed customers’ cash after voiding cash transactions during the summer, beginning in June. The employee, a 52-year-old woman, was terminated after the loss prevention department investigated. According to the report, Walgreens provided video footage of the incidents. The theft was reported to police on Aug. 5.
July 25
Wallet found: Two women found a wallet in the road in the 7400 block of North Mercer Way and turned it in at the MIPD. The wallet contained a New York driver’s license, military ID, debit card and other documents.
Accident: A driver ran a stop sign in the intersection of S.E. 27th Street and 77th Avenue S.E. and struck a vehicle making a left turn at 10:36 a.m. The driver, 30, admitted he was at fault for not stopping or yielding the right of way. Witness statements matched. No injuries were reported.
July 29
Burglary: An unknown suspect broke into a house for sale in the 3400 block of 79th Avenue S.E. sometime after 3 p.m. on July 28. A real estate agent who was staging the residence for sale found that the center glass pane was broken out of the back door, which was left open.
Fender-bender: A vehicle backed into the rear bumper of an occupied, parked vehicle in the North end QFC parking lot at 3:30 p.m. There were no injuries.
Aug. 1
Malicious mischief: Someone used sidewalk chalk to write hateful language on the Mercerwood Shoreclub basketball court, and plastic deck chairs were damaged after being thrown into the water. Video camera footage might be available.
Car prowls: Someone entered an unlocked BMW parked in the driveway of a residence in the 6900 block of 94th Avenue S.E. during the night of July 26, while the residents were out of town. Several pairs of sunglasses were stolen along with an In Spa gift card. Suspect(s) left earbuds and a smoked cigarette butt in the back of the vehicle. The driver’s window was broken out of a Volkswagen Jetta in the same driveway, and two bottles of perfume were stolen along with a leather purse, gift cards and pens.
Theft: A 77-year-old woman reported a theft that occurred before July 6. A gold wrist watch, gold pendant coin and 100 Swiss Francs were stolen from the woman’s residence in the 2700 block of 74th Avenue S.E. The woman’s passport was also stolen.
Aug. 2
Theft: A Bose stereo system was reported missing from an 88-year-old Mercer Island woman’s residence in the 9100 block of Fortuna Drive. The theft was reported by the victim’s power of attorney.
Fender-bender: An SUV backed into a passing vehicle in the Walgreens parking lot in the 7700 block of S.E. 28th Street at 2:15 p.m.
Accident: A collision occurred at 3:45 p.m. in the intersection of West Mercer Way and Merrimount Drive after a vehicle failed to yield the right of way. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Car prowl: A suspect smashed the driver’s window of a Toyota Prius between 5:45 and 6:30 p.m. in the 7900 block of Island Crest Way. A purse with $40, gift cards and ID was stolen from the front passenger seat.
Bicycle accident: A 57-year-old bicyclist crashed in the intersection of North Mercer Way and 76th Avenue S.E. at 5:55 p.m. Witnesses observed that the bicyclist entered the crosswalk at a high speed as a vehicle was turning. The bicyclist crashed after braking hard to avoid colliding with the vehicle. He sustained scrapes and bruises.
Explosion: Someone used a firework to blow up a mailbox at 9:25 p.m. in the 7800 block of S.E. 72nd Street.
Aug. 3
Arrest: Seattle police arrested a 27-year-old man with two MIPD warrants with bail set at $5,000 and $10,000 at 5:58 a.m. The warrants were for assault and battery, and driving with a suspended license. The suspect was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Car prowls: Two unlocked vehicles were prowled overnight in the 3800 block of Greenbrier Lane. An iPod charger was stolen.
Someone stole a sweatshirt, dive weights and $10 from an unlocked Toyota Camry in the 3800 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. overnight.
A cell phone charger and ignition key were stolen from two unsecured vehicles overnight in the 3800 block of 76th Avenue S.E.
A wallet was stolen out of a Toyota Highlander in the 4200 block of East Mercer Way. The vehicle had been locked, but it was left with its windows rolled down. The wallet, taken from underneath the driver’s seat, contained $120 in cash, ID and cards.
DUI: Police responded to a report of a driver slumped over his steering wheel in traffic at 7:53 p.m. in the 3900 block of Island Crest Way. The driver, a 44-year-old Seattle man who had been drinking, refused field sobriety tests and a breath/blood test. He was arrested and booked into the King County Jail. Police collected alcoholic beverage cans from inside his vehicle.
Bicycle theft: A 19-year-old Mercer Island girl reported that her bicycle was stolen while she was working. She had left the bicycle behind Yo Mercer in the 8400 block of S.E. 68th Street.
DUI: A vehicle struck a utility pole at high speed in the 6800 block of West Mercer Way at 1:50 a.m. The driver, 22, had been drinking and fled from the scene on foot. Police arrested him at 2:28 a.m., and he admitted driving “aggressively” before his vehicle went off the road and crashed. The vehicle’s front end was extensively damaged and there were skid marks on the road. No injuries were reported, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.
Aug. 4
Malicious mischief: Someone damaged a wooden fence in front of a residence in the 3400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. after likely backing into it sometime overnight.
Assault: A 20-year-old Mercer Island man was arrested at 11:19 p.m. in the 2700 block of 78th Avenue S.E. for assaulting another young man with a pocket knife. The suspect was booked into the King County Jail.
Aug. 5
Theft: A 65-year-old Mercer Island man reported that his pressure washer was stolen in the 6500 block of S.E. 28th Street.
Malicious mischief: Someone keyed and scratched a Lexus in the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive when it was parked in front of the victim’s apartment building.
Theft: Two bicycles were stolen from Mercerdale Park between 5 and 5:30 p.m. The bikes belonged to two 13-year-old boys who walked to McDonalds and hid their bikes in the woods near the skate park.
Aug. 6
Arrest: Police stopped a vehicle with expired tabs and arrested the 19-year-old driver at 12:08 a.m. in the 4200 block of East Mercer Way. The driver told police he had just lost his license. His vehicle, which had one dealer plate displayed, was impounded.
DUI: Police responded to a report of a pedestrian-vehicle accident at 5:20 p.m. in the 4000 block of West Mercer Way. Aid arrived at the scene to assess a toddler in baby stroller but aid was not administered. The driver was arrested after taking field sobriety tests and was processed at the Seafair BUI processing center at Proctor Landing.
Aug. 7
Impounded: A vehicle was ticketed and impounded after parking illegally in front of a residence in the 3400 block of 69th Ave. S.E. The reporting party claimed that a traffic accident had occurred, but there was no accident. The vehicle’s front end blocked part of a driveway and broke off a bush limb.
Traffic offense: A 41-year-old woman parked her vehicle less than eight feet from the center line in the 3400 block of West Mercer Way and blocked traffic in the evening. The vehicle was towed.
Impounded: A vehicle was impounded at 11 a.m. in the 7000 block of S.E. 20th Street for blocking the roadway. The vehicle was parked within 30 feet of a no parking sign.
Aug. 8
Theft: An employee of Mercer Island Dermatology in the 2800 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. conducted unauthorized medical procedures. The 40-year-old Seattle woman began stealing Botox vials in January 2010, and administered the substance to patients. The employer notified police after identifying missing compounds through an audit and obtaining a signed confession from the suspect.
Theft: Two paddle boards were stolen from a yard and dock at a residence in the 4700 block of Forest Avenue S.E. A graphite paddle was also stolen sometime between Aug. 3 and Aug. 6 while the resident was away. The estimated loss is $3,100.
Aug. 9
Informational report: Alcohol and possible marijuana were found among model rocket engines in the Mercer Island Thrift Store at 9:50 a.m. The items were turned in to the MIPD for destruction.
Luring: A 26-year-old Mercer Island woman reported that an unknown man attempted to lure her 2-year-old son at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 6. The woman was gardening in her yard on 88th Avenue S.E. when the suspect called to the boy. When the woman stepped out from behind her bushes, the suspect covered his face and ran away. He drove off in a truck.
Aug. 10
Accident: A vehicle speeding 10 mph over the limit crossed the center line in the 4300 block of East Mercer Way and struck an oncoming vehicle at 7:25 a.m. The driver, a 19-year-old Mercer Island male, estimated that his speed was 35 mph and he was charged with negligent driving. The other vehicle was towed from the scene. There were no injuries.
Theft: Someone stole a leaf blower worth $300 from a driveway in the 3700 block of 80th Avenue S.E. between 4 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. The leaf blower belonged to landscapers who were working in the backyard.
Aug. 11
Drug possession: Police arrested a 20-year-old Mercer Island man who was sitting in his vehicle in the south Luther Burbank Park lot after closing at 12:04 a.m. A marijuana pipe and film canister used for storing marijuana were sitting on the passenger seat in plain view. Police searched the vehicle with written consent and found marijuana in the canister.
Car prowl: The rear passenger window of a Honda CR-V was smashed out in the south Luther Burbank Park lot in the 2000 block of 84th Avenue S.E. between 12 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. A gym bag and laptop were stolen out of the vehicle.
