A windstorm that ripped through the region overnight caused widespread power outages and road closures that has resulted in Mercer Island School District classes being cancelled today.

The Mercer Island Police Department notes on its Facebook page this morning that many roads and powerlines were affected by the storm.

“This is a dynamic situation and we expect to have more details as daylight arrives,” the page reads.

At post time, copious signals are unlit and drivers should treat each of those intersections as a four-way stop.

On the power-outage front, Puget Sound Energy reported approximately 12 outages affecting about 8,000 Island customers. Presently, crews are inspecting the outages and more details and a potential restoration time will be released soon. At post time, blocked roads — most which were barricaded with city signage — were: 4507 E. Mercer Way; the 6400 block East Mercer Way; 4728 86th Ave. SE; the 3400 block 97th Ave. SE; the 9600 block of SE 36th St. (tree blocking the eastbound lane only); and the 8400 block of East Mercer Way (yesterday’s blowdown wrap-up).
