Police arrested a 32-year-old woman who was not wearing clothes on the swim beach dock at 2:44 p.m., Sept. 6. The woman, a Bellevue resident, gave a false name, made threats against the officers and their families, and resisted arrest. She was taken to the MIPD, where she was cited for indecent exposure and resisting arrest. A one-year trespass order for Luther Burbank Park was given to her. She then received a courtesy transport back to her vehicle at the park.
During the month of August, the Mercer Island Police Department reported 1,171 calls for service, with 39 thefts, three burglaries, two cases of simple assault and three cases of aggravated assault. There were 17 traffic accidents, four DUI arrests, two hit-and-run accidents, one bike accident, 20 criminal traffic citations, 40 parking citations, and 255 total citations. Police made 25 arrests.
Aug. 23
Keys found: A set of keys for a Toyota, with a Mercer Island Country Club ID card, was turned into the MIPD. Police located and notified the subject, and placed the keys into will call.
Aug. 25
Fraud: A 58-year-old Mercer Island man’s credit card was fraudulently used. The man lost $347.
Aug. 27
DUI: A Mercer Island man, 51, confronted three young men who drove down his driveway at 4 a.m. in the 3000 block of 81st Place S.E. They turned up their music and prepared to light a pipe with suspected marijuana, and the driver was noticeably intoxicated. Police arrested the driver, a 19-year-old Bellevue resident, at 4:24 a.m. for DUI and possession of marijuana. Both passengers were cited for minor in possession.
Aug. 28
Crayfish pot: Police found a crayfish pot in Lake Washington south of the I-90 East Channel bridge, a half mile into the channel. The float’s markings did not follow requirements, and it was removed.
Theft: Someone used a Mercer Island woman’s debit card information in two transactions totaling $629.47.
Car prowl: A purse was stolen out of a Honda CR-V in the north Luther Burbank parking lot sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The vehicle’s rear passenger window was smashed out.
Aug. 29
Threats: Two men in a dispute over a parking stall at Luther Burbank Park threatened to assault each other at 12:04 p.m. Each man blamed the other for making threats.
Graffiti: Red graffiti was spraypainted at the Mercerdale skate park sometime after Aug. 24. The damage totaled $500.
Arrest: A 62-year-old Seattle man was arrested on an outstanding DUI $1,000 warrant at 4:53 p.m. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Trespass: A Mercer Island resident confronted a stranger in his garage at 10:30 a.m. The suspect, an Asian woman, left without stealing anything. The resident gave a suspect description and vehicle license number to police. Police found that the suspect’s vehicle had been reported stolen.
Assault: A Mercer Island man, 50, hit his 20-year-old stepson in the foot with a curtain rod after 11:57 p.m. One witness said she saw the suspect holding the curtain rod, but did not see him use it. The suspect was arrested at 12:40 a.m., and he was booked into the King County Jail.
Aug. 30
Bike Found: A Mercer Island woman found a bike on her property in the 7400 block of West Mercer Way. She turned it into the police department, but the owner could not be located.
Aug. 31
Arrest: Police arrested a Bothell man, 46, on a $2,000 Bellevue warrant for driving with a suspended license in the 3000 block of 78th Avenue S.E. after stopping him for a traffic violation. He was taken into the custody of Bellevue police.
Found: A gas trimmer fell off a landscaping truck at 12:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. It was turned into the MIPD.
Accident: A 13-year-old boy opened his passenger side door as a vehicle was pulling into the adjacent parking stall at 8:30 a.m. in the Starbucks lot at 7695 S.E. 27th Street. The boy did not look before opening the door, which was struck by the incoming vehicle. Both parties’ statements and damages matched.
Fender-bender: A van scraped the corner of a parked, unoccupied vehicle at 12 p.m. in the 2600 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The driver, a 48-year-old Mercer Island woman, was attempting to park.
Fraud: A resident of S.E. 53rd Place reported receiving several non-sufficient fund notices after checks were forged in her name between Aug. 4 and Aug. 29. The checks were from accounts the woman did not open. An unknown suspect opened fraudulent checking accounts with the woman’s name and address.
Sept. 1
Disputed bench: A restaurant owner in the 2800 block of 78th Avenue S.E. reported that his bartender, 27, was “maliciously” involved in getting rid of one of his benches that was in front of the bar. An unknown suspect destroyed the bench and threw it away sometime after Aug. 18.
Sept. 2
Car prowls: Two unlocked vehicles were prowled in the 3000 block of 60th Avenue S.E. sometime overnight. Both vehicles were Lexuses. No items were stolen, and fingerprints were lifted.
An unlocked vehicle was prowled sometime overnight in the 3000 block of 62nd Avenue S.E. The thief thumbed through a case of CDs, stole four CDs, and left the case and remaining CDs on the front passenger seat. $4 in change was also stolen.
Attempted burglary: A woman and her 12-year-old daughter heard someone ring their doorbell and knock on the door at 1:05 p.m. in the 7600 block of S.E. 72nd Street. Five minutes later, the suspect tried to kick in the back door after turning the handle and damaging the deadbolt lock. The suspect then fled. A shoe print was lifted from the door.
Bicycle theft: A 34-year-old woman locked two bikes to a bike rack at the North Mercer park and ride at 7:15 a.m. She returned at 4 p.m. While she was gone, both locks were removed and one bike was missing, along with a helmet. There is no suspect information.
DUI: A Mercer Island woman, 44, reported a drunk man driving a Lexus in her driveway at 5:36 p.m. in the 9900 block of S.E. 35th Place. Police arrested the driver, a 39-year-old Mercer Island man, at 5:52 p.m. after he would not leave. Police found two open bottles of vodka in the vehicle. The suspect, possibly also under the influence of drugs, was given a medical evaluation before being taken to Overlake Hospital.
Burglary: Police arrested three male teenagers at 8:15 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Mercer Way for burglarizing a residence in the 6500 block of 81st Avenue S.E. The boys entered an open garage and stole beer and wine out of a refrigerator. Two residents saw the boys flee from the residence in a BMW and positively identified them after they were located and arrested. Police searched the suspects’ vehicle but did not find the stolen items. The suspects were released to their parents after being taken to the MIPD.
Theft: A 50-year-old Mercer Island woman reported that someone entered her vehicle, a Ford Taurus, and stole $30 in cash and change along with a credit card sometime after Aug. 28. The woman had parked the vehicle in front of her apartment and did not check it until a week later.
Sept. 3
DUI: Police stopped a BMW for running a stop sign at 12:56 a.m. in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way. The driver, a 20-year-old Renton man, had a bottle of brandy on the passenger seat and admitted consuming alcohol. He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. His vehicle was impounded, and he was released to a sober friend after being processed.
Accident: A collision occurred in the intersection of S.E. 27th Street and 77th Avenue S.E. at 12:15 p.m. A 36-year-old driver was cited for inattention after he pulled into the intersection while being distracted by an unknown object and T-boned a vehicle crossing the intersection with the right of way. Both vehicles were damaged, but there were no injuries.
Theft: An unidentified suspect did not pay her dinner bill at Mo’s Pizza in the 2600 block of 77th Avenue S.E. at 7 p.m. She owed $25.67 but left only $0.67 and an invalid gift certificate on the table after being told by restaurant management that her gift certificate could only be used if the bill was over $35.
Sept. 5
Drugs: Police arrested two male teenagers at 1:04 a.m. in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street in an SUV with marijuana in open view. The 18-year-old driver had just used his brother’s Florida driver’s license to purchase alcohol from QFC and admitted that the marijuana was his. Both teens were released to their parents after being taken to the MIPD.
Hit and run: A 22-year-old Newcastle driver was cited for a hit and run after leaving Groveland Park at 5:41 p.m. in the 6000 block of West Mercer Way. The driver went off the road after turning onto West Mercer Way and struck an unoccupied vehicle parked on the shoulder. A post was also damaged. The driver left the scene without leaving his contact information. Three witnesses of the collision gave a description of the suspect’s vehicle to police, who located and stopped the vehicle. The passenger admitted to the hit and run, and the suspect vehicle was impounded.
DUI: At 6:14 p.m. a police officer arrived at the scene of a traffic stop where the Newcastle hit and run suspect, a passenger, was in custody in the 7100 block of West Mercer Way. The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 21-year-old Mercer Island man, had been drinking and took field sobriety tests. He was arrested and processed at both the Bellevue and Mercer Island police departments before being released to a sober adult.
