Carma Helen Ferguson Lanford, adored wife, mother and grandmother, passed away from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the afternoon of Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. Carma’s husband, daughter and friend were at her side.She was born December 28, 1932 in Center Moriches, Long Island, NY to Donald and Elizabeth (Betty) Pirie Ferguson. Carma and her two older brothers, Donald and Richard who are both now deceased, grew up in the family home on the Rogue River in Gold Hill, Oregon. After graduation from Gold Hill high school, Carma attended the University of Oregon graduating with a teaching degree. At the UO Carma met her lifelong love, Jack Lanford. They married and while raising their family of 3 moved to Coos Bay, Tumwater, Yakima, Bellevue, San Jose, Portland, Wyckoff, NJ and then back to Mercer Island in 1978 where she lived for 32 years. Carma loved to travel with her husband and family and traveled the United States and the world extensively. She cherished spending time with family and friends and maintained her wonderful sense of humor throughout her life. Active in Tri Delta sorority at the UO and as an alum, an ardent bridge player with the Mercer Island Women’s Club, former member of the Mercer Island Beach Club, real estate agent with Wallace and Wheeler, an early supporter of Overlake Hospital and a recent attendee at Mercer Island Probus events, Carma was always active, warmhearted and gracious.Carma is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jack Lanford and children; Jeff Lanford of Vancouver, Washington, Jane Lanford and Janet Lanford Byers (Jim Byers) of Bellevue and six grandchildren (Miranda, Elle, Courtney, Madison, Ben and Reilly).No memorial service is planned at this time. “Mom, a piece of our hearts went with you when you passed.
