Diane Carol Dunning
Diane Carol Dunning (Deena), a native of New York and long time resident of Mercer Island, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA after a courageous battle with cancer. Affectionately know as Deena to her many friends and dance students, she was a teacher of classical ballet for over 50 years. She taught at Dancer’s Workshop in the Buffalo, NY area for 6 years and at Ballet La Jeunesse at Taluca Lake, CA for 15 years before coming to Mercer Island in 1989. Her latest studio was Ballet with Deena on Mercer Island. Deena was a guest teacher and choreographer at several schools and colleges across the country. She also was a soloist at Ballet La Jeunesse and took part in many other productions. Deena imparted the beauty and grace of ballet to all her students from the studio to community outreach; 6 years old to 80 years young, headed for a NY City production or overcoming mental, emotional or physical challenges. She deemed success to be participation and she was never so vibrant as when she donned her slippers and prepared for class.
Deena was multi talented as an avid knitter, seamstress, making ballet costumes, flower arranger and crafter in addition to playing classical piano. She had a very compassionate, caring heart, reaching out to many over the years. Every Christmas she sent boxes of dressed animals and dolls to Rise and Shine Ministries in Seattle. She was known for the many greeting cards that she mailed out and the little unexpected gifts that she gave. Deena was called a very special lady with a deep faith who touched many lives. Those who knew her were very blessed indeed.
Deena was the daughter of the late Paul and Doris Smith. She Is survived by a son Bradford of Colorado and 3 grandchildren -Drae, Jayleigh and Jagger- whom she adored. She also is survived by a sister Beverly and 2 brothers, Ronald and David.
