Donald P. Schumacher, MD
Donald P. Schumacher, MD, age 90. Passed away July 9, 2014. A long time resident of Mercer Island, Dr. Schumacher practiced anesthesia in the greater Seattle area for many years, first as a partner with Associated Anesthesiologists and later at the Medical Dental Building Hospital. He was President of the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists in 1972.
Born in Dubuque, Iowa, August 17, 1923 to Erwin M. and Pearl Schumacher, the family moved to Parkersburg, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1941. After serving in WWII, he graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine (class of 1952) and completed his Post Graduate Degree in anesthesiology at the University of Washington. Settling the family on Mercer Island, his brother, E. Ralph Schumacher, DDS, and parents soon followed.
Don enjoyed woodworking, cars, duck hunting (Royal Bluff Ranch), fishing, travel (including many family vacations to Mexico and Hawaii), time with family and friends and his football. For many years he was a season’s ticket holder to both the Seahawks and Huskies. After retirement, he became an active member of the Mercer Island VFW Post # 5760 and Masons.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Roma Jean, two daughters, Jann Schumacher and Cheryl Schumacher (Joseph Russell), son, Donald P. Schumacher, II, grandson, Cullen Russell and many extended family members.
Remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
