September 10, 1927 – September 23, 2024
The youngest of twelve, Genny was born in St Louis Missouri. She was preceded in passing by her husband of 70 years, Donald Edward Rees, and her son Donald E. Rees, Jr. She is survived by her children Susan Kilka, Barabra Layouni, Brian Rees, Patricia Easley, and three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She passed peacefully at home surrounded by her loving children. She was 97 years old.
Genny was a Mercer Island resident since 1951 and a beloved, vibrant, and active member of the community all her years. She routinely bicycled, ran, and walked the Island; volunteered more than 30 years at the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Thrift Shop; and was a devout member of Saint Monica’s Catholic Church.
Most widly known as an award-winning painter, she specialized in rich large-scale florals. She served as president of the Mercer Island Visual Arts League and Women Painters of Washington and was a member of the Eastside Association of Fine Arts and Northwest Watercolor Society. Her works have been seen in magazines, books, and private and corporate collections across the Northwest and Alaska.
Genny’s kind smile, infinite patience, and loving spirit will be remembered by many artists, volunteers, friends, and family. In lieu of gifts, donations in her name may be made to the MIVAL youth scholarship program.
