Gladys Lilia Edith Ross Kellegrew
June 20, 1927 – November 16, 2011
Gladys was born in Vancouver, British Columbia to George and Olive Ross. In 1930, the family moved to Seattle and eventually settled near the Seattle Tennis Club where Gladys took tennis lessons. She went on to win the junior girls Seattle and Washington State tournaments. Gladys attended Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles to further her tennis skills. After high school, Gladys returned to Seattle and won the Washington State Women’s Tennis Championship.Gladys worked as a stewardess and purser for Pan American Airways. She loved meeting passengers and stayed active in World Wings. Gladys retired from Pan Am when she married Bill Kellegrew in Seattle on April 9, 1960. They raised their family on the south end of Mercer Island where she continued to play tennis at STC and MICC.Both Bill and Glad enjoyed volunteering at Northwest Harvest, Habitat for Humanity, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Glad was generous and liked to give people gifts she made. She loved to see joy in other people’s faces. She was a great cook and liked standing out in a crowd. Gladys, the “Hat Lady”, made and wore hats for every occasion.Gladys is survived by her sister Elaine; her children Marsh (Marcie), Sarah (Brenden) and Kevin; and her grandchildren Dale, Kelley, and Matthew. Memorial service will be 11:00 am at Mercer Island Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 3rd.
