Gladys Elizabeth Smith died on March 10, 2009. She was born on July 27, 1917, in St. Genevieve, Mo., to the late Elsie Thomure and Ottie Layton.

Mrs. Smith worked for the Missouri-Illinois Tractor Company for more than 30 years as an accounting secretary and greatly enjoyed time with family and friends after her retirement. She enjoyed residing at the Terrance Apartments in Columbia, Mo., until the last few years of her life, when she resided at Island House on Mercer Island. She was a member of the Optimisses Club and a dog-lover who took great pleasure in caring for her golden retriever, Susie.

Mrs. Smith was the much-loved wife of Arnold L. Smith Sr., with whom she shared 67 years of marriage before his death in 2001. She is survived by her son, Dr. Arnold L. Smith Jr. (Cheyne Peterson-Smith), of Mercer Island; and a niece, Carol McCord (William), of St. Louis, Mo. She was grandmother to Kurt Smith, Lesley Smith (Edward Redonnet), Shannon Carbino, Hannah Smith and Annaliese Smith; great-grandmother of seven; and great-great-grandmother to one child.
