HARDIN (COTTON) LOUIS TURNEY

Hardin Louis Turney passed away on November 7, 2016 in his home on Mercer Island, Washington at the age of 95.

Hardin was better known by his nickname “Cotton”. He was born in Ridgeway, TX, on November 29, 1920 to James Bowman and Ida Lue (Patterson) Turney. His childhood years were spent in Hugo, Oklahoma.

Cotton graduated from Hugo High School in 1939. He attended Oklahoma State University, but his education was interrupted by WWII. Cotton served in both the Army Signal Corps and the US Navy. After being honorably discharged from military service, Cotton was offered a job with Pacific Northwest Bell and he moved to Seattle, Washington. Cotton worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 41 years. He married Helen Marie Sweeney on September 28, 1945. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1952 with a degree in Economics. In 1970 he obtained an MBA in Economics from Seattle University.

Cotton moved his family from Seattle to Mercer Island in 1963 and remained on the Island for 53 years, until his death.

He was an avid fisherman and golfer. Both Cotton and his wife were members of the Glendale Golf and Country Club for 36 years.

Cotton and his wife made many good friends through their golfing activities and their social life revolved around these connections. Cotton had an older brother, Douglas Howard Turney, who passed away in 1994. Another brother, Joseph Bowman Turney, lives in Baldwin City, Kansas.

Cotton is survived by Helen, his wife of 71 years of Mercer Island; a daughter Terese Turney-Ajer and 2 grandchildren, Kerrianne Ajer and Nicholas Ajer, all in Seattle, Washington.

His ashes will be interred at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline, WA. Private family services were held at Holyrood Cemetery.
