Iliene Hagstrom
Iliene ‘Sunny’ ‘Sweet Nan’ ‘Mom’ Hagstrom passed away on March 29, 2011 at the age of 95. Born in Sumner May 27, 1915 she spent her entire life in the Seattle area with many of those years on Mercer Island. Married to Clarence in 1944, step-children Mary Lynn and Bob were welcomed wholeheartedly into an instant family. Craig, Todd and Janet made 1946, 1949 and 1957 busy years. A life devoted to others, 22 years were at MIHS running the attendance office. She loved the kids and they loved her in return. Hugs were issued daily. She called them vitamins. The class of 1970 even had car washes and bake sales, sending her to Hawaii to visit son Todd. Upon retiring in 1983, the MI Reporter ran a front page photo and story on how she had touched so many lives, with the banner “Everyone calls her Mom”. Much too young at age 68 to fully retire, she continued selling tickets at all home football and basketball games, commuting from the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at the UW where she was the house mother for the next 8 years. Boundless energy and love, the unofficial counselor for MIHS and KKG. Always something nice to say. Always a smile. Sunny. She loved her Hawaiian vacations with Craig, Carol and kids and traveled several times to Australia to visit daughter Janet and family while they were living there. She is missed, however the family knows exactly where she is and we will all be together again some day. A celebration of her life will be held at the Community Center at Mercer View on May 11th at 4:00PM. Donation, if you wish, to Mercer Island Youth and Family Services.
