Jacoba Katherine (Burema) Schembs

Jacoba Katherine (Burema) Schembs, died peacefully with her family at her side on Thursday, November 29, 2012 in Mercer Island, three days after celebrating her 100 birthday.She was born in Chicago, and lived there, Cincinnati and Mercer Island. Following graduation from IIT she taught elementary school. After raising three children she went back to teaching, a passion she loved. In Seattle she was active with Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Womens University Club, and the Mercer Island Womens Club. She was an avid reader, gardener, traveler, and loved life to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank and daughter Julia Papacostas. Jacoba is survived by her son, Frank Schembs, (Jean), daughter, Jacoba Atkins, (Clay); and son-in law Frank; grandchildren, Stephen Schembs, Keith Schembs, (Polly), Kristin Feronti, (Rich), John Atkins, (Melody), Davis Atkins, Nicholas Papacostas (Elizabeth), Michael Papacostas, (Bethany), Katherine, Anne and John Papacostas, and great grandchildren, Lauren, Morgan, Kassandra, Prescott, Rich, Ella and Lucy.Burial will be in Chicago at Forest Home, Saturday December 8th. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund, Covenant Shores Benevolent Fund, or charity of your choice. 712252
