James A. Nussbaum

March 10, 1923 – November 24, 2011

James (Jim) Alfred Nussbaum was born March 10, 1923 in Seattle, Washington to Edward (Ted) Michael Nussbaum and Molly (Levy) Nussbaum. Jim graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, and joined the Boy Scouts of America as a young boy. He remained active in Scouting his entire life, serving on the Eagle Scout Board of Review and establishing a museum at Camp Parsons on the Olympic Peninsula that chronicles the history of Camp Parsons and Scouting. During WWII Jim joined the 10th Mountain Division and was sent to Camp Hale in Colorado. He taught mountain combat in West Virginia for two years before being shipped to Mount Belvedere in the Piedmont region of the Italian Alps. At one point a German machine gunner was decimating Jim’s unit, Jim thought he could climb out of the foxhole and shoot the gunner, but as he climbed out he was shot in the back for which he received a Purple Heart. Back at home in Seattle, Jim enrolled in the Pacific Northwest School of Photography, and then embarked on a successful commercial photography business before settling down and raising a family. He worked for many years at Steinberg Brothers Manufacturing. After retirement Jim became quite involved with the 10th Mountain Alumni Association. He traveled back to Italy with this group on three separate occasions, continued to hike and ski with them, and became their designated photographer. Jim is survived by his daughters Elaine Susan Nussbaum of Scappose, Oregon, and Jan Nussbaum of the San Francisco Bay area; son Professor E. Michael Nussbaum of Las Vegas, and niece Teddi Simons of Seattle. A retrospective of his photography will be on display later this month at his former residence, Aljoya: 2430 76th Ave SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040. A Celebration of Life will be held this spring or summer. Request for details on the celebration and other correspondence may be sent to jnussbaum903@gmail.com.
