Kathryn Barnes

Former Islander, Kathryn Coleman Muchmore Barnes, died on Jan. 4 in Shelton, Wash. She was 104. Mrs. Barnes lived in the East Seattle area of Mercer Island for many years with her first husband, Cecil Muchmore, who died in 1951. In 1959, she married Bill Barnes Sr. and they lived in East Seattle until their retirement in the mid-1960s. They then moved to the town of Matlock, near Shelton. When Bill Sr. died in 1980, Mrs. Barnes moved to Shelton, where she remained until her death.

Mrs. Barnes was born in Seattle on July 6, 1904 to Edward P. and Charlotte (Byington) Coleman.

She was a charter member of the Seattle Weavers Guild, formed in 1927. She was the last surviving member of the original guild. She also belonged to the Olympia Weavers Guild, the “Quota Club” (a women’s business group) of Seattle, the Matlock Grange, the Matlock Homemakers Club, the Mason County Historical Society and Mason General Hospital Auxiliary, where she worked as a volunteer in the hospital gift shop. She also enjoyed gardening and reading, and spent many Christmases in Hawaii with her goddaughter, Kris Leopold, and friends.

Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Worley. She is survived by her stepchildren, Bill Barnes and his wife, Susan, of Mercer Island; Clemens Barnes and his wife, Lisa Anderson, of Seattle; Dori Neubronner and her husband, Eckert, of Germany; and a niece, Sue Worley, of Puyallup; five stepgrandsons, William, Robert and Stephen Barnes (all raised on Mercer Island), and Marcus and Eric Neubronner, of Germany; three great-stepgranddaughters; and several grand nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mrs. Barnes’ life is scheduled between noon and 3 p.m., Friday, Jan 23 at the Maple Glen Assisted Living Community, 1700 13th Loop Road, Shelton.
