Manfred Laband was born to Herbert and Dina Laband on November 24, 1926 in Breslau, Germany. He died February 20, 2012 at home with his loving wife by his side. He, his parents and sister Inge were fortunate to be able to immigrate to the United States arriving October, 1938 shortly before Kristallnacht.He attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City and after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He returned to New York University in 1946 where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and did graduate work at Columbia University. Mannie received his M.D. degree from New York University, School of Medicine in 1954 and spent the next 5 years in internship and residency training in New York’s Bellevue Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital and Bronx Municipal Hospital. He, his wife Esther and their two sons, Jeffrey and Steven, came to Seattle in 1959. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology at a number of Seattle Hospitals but mainly at The Doctors Hospital where among many other departmental and committee appointments, he was honored with the Teacher of the year award, became Chief of Staff and served on the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees. During negotiations of the merger with Seattle General and Swedish Hospital, Mannie served on the Merger Committee and was appointed co-chief of the OB/Gyn Department at Swedish Hospital. He was also a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington.In 1968 he married Karen Grove; they had their beautiful daughter, Amy, in 1971 to bring home to her brothers, Jeff and Steve. Karen & Mannie shared 43 wonderful years together working hard, playing hard and traveling the world. Their favorite retreat was their home in Maui, spending several months a year there after retirement. It was extra special when any of the grandkids came for a visit.When Mannie retired 15 years ago, he missed his patients terribly. Fearing his skills as a physician might go away, he took up Japanese Bonsai Gardening and spent most of his days and evenings tending to (or making rounds on) his green “patients”, transplanting, wiring them, watering and fertilizing. No friend was allowed to leave our home without an hours tour of his treasures explaining something unique about each one. His sizeable collection is available to anyone who would love & care for them the way he did. His children meant everything to him and his grandchildren were the light of his life. He had a special connection with his only grandson, Logan. How proud he was that all three of his children have happy, successful lives and there is no doubt his legacy will live on in his wonderfully special grandchildren. We lost an amazing man – he was one of a kind and we will miss him terribly. Mannie was caring and insightful about humanity; he had a great passion for politics, world events and learning. He cared deeply about his friends and mentoring young people about investments & saving for the future. He lived life to the fullest and had tremendous integrity and conviction. He is also survived by his loving sister Inge Strauss (husband & best friend Bruno and their four sons Bob, Randy, Bill & Michael and their 9 grandchildren).
