Margaret Elaine Reid | Obituary

Feb 20, 1938 – March 15, 2025

Margaret Elaine Reid, affectionately known as Margie, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2025. She was born on February 20, 1938, in Southbridge, Massachusetts, to Gladys and Joseph Polakowski. Margie lived a life filled with passion, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Margie attended Boston University, where she earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in teaching, shaping the lives of countless students throughout her career.

In 1962, while teaching English overseas, she met helicopter pilot Robert Reid at the Officer’s Club in Hanau, Germany. They were married on January 19, 1963 in her hometown of Southbridge, embarking on a 62-year journey together. Their early years were spent in Elgin, Illinois, where their son, Michael David, was born. They later moved to Tacoma, Washington, where their daughter, Darcy Jo, joined the family. They eventually settled on Mercer Island. Margie filled her days teaching, participating in the Junior League of Seattle and leading Girl Scouts.

Margie was a woman of many talents and passions. An avid hiker and skier, she found joy in the beauty of the outdoors. Her love of skiing resulted in her coordinating the elementary ski bus to Alpental, joining a ski club where she spent Tuesdays at Crystal Mtn, and crossing the border to Whistler, BC whenever possible.

Her creative spirit was shared with others through her knitting, sewing, and stunning calligraphy. Her love for cooking and baking was legendary, and her handwritten letters and thank you notes were treasured by all who received them.

As the wife of a pilot, Margie embraced the opportunity to travel the world, exploring countless destinations and cultures. She loved to travel with Bob but also enjoyed traveling with friends and making new friends along the way.

She was a devoted grandparent, finding immense joy in watching her grandchildren, or “grands” as she lovingly called them, participate in their various activities. She was their biggest cheerleader, always beaming with pride at their accomplishments.

Margie’s legacy is one of love, creativity, and unwavering support for her family and community. She will be deeply missed by her husband Bob, sister Joyce (Jim), daughter Darcy (Patrick), daughter-in-law Kathi, and her grandchildren: Justin, Connor, Anna and Emily.

A celebration of Margie’s life will be held at St Monica Catholic Church, Mercer Island on Friday, April 11, 2025. Mass at 11am, reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margie’s honor at the charity of your choice.
