November 27th, 1926 – February 6th, 2024
Born to Niels and Klara Nielsen in Everet, WA in 1926. Margaret passed away peacefully at the age of 97. She was a resident of Mercer Island for 90 years and for many years lived in a 3-bedroom farmhouse on Thompson Hill near the Roanoke Inn with three sisters and two brothers. She attended grade school at the East Seattle School and later finished high school in Bellevue.
In her late teen years, she met her future husband, Gene Vik, walking home from his old Ballard home to the Vik’s newer property just off of I-90. A converted horse barn was transformed into a small, cozy house on the ten-acre property known as Nob Hill, a former fruit tree orchard. In the following years, Gene and his brothers logged, cut and milled lumber from the fir trees on the property to build the family home for Margaret and Gene on 40th Street.
Margaret was a person with a great sense of humor and a dedication to family life. She had a love of gardening and her collection of beautiful rhododendrons graced her yard. She enjoyed family camping trips to Lake Chelan and gambling trips to Reno, NV with family and friends. With her engaging personality, she also enjoyed her time as a waitress and manager at several Island restaurants. She had a gift of gab, loved conversation and a good cup of coffee. She was also very generous with her time and money, volunteering for several years at the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital working with disabled children and donating to various veteran organizations.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Gene and daughter, Peggy. She is survived by her two sons, Jim and Jens, granddaughter, Jennifer, grandsons, Jules and Jorma and great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Alex, London and Hudson.
A celebration of life will be planned in the near future.
Special thanks to the many wonderful doctors and nurses, aides, caregivers and volunteers who supported and befriended Margaret in her final years.
