Longtime Mercer Island resident Margaret (Peg) Thieme Hawkes, 80, died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, in Redmond, Wash. Her family was by her side.
She was born on July 25, 1929, in Seattle, Wash., to George R. and Sallie I. Thieme. She grew up in the Denny Blaine neighborhood of Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School in 1947. She went on to Mount Holyoke College, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics.
Mrs. Hawkes married her longtime friend and love, Robert C. Hawkes, in 1951. They started their family in Ann Arbor, Mich., and after having four children, moved to Mercer Island in 1961.
Mrs. Hawkes had a life-time love of figure skating, the ballet and the performing arts. She was a passionate supporter of the Pacific Northwest Ballet, working at one time as president of the PNB League. She was active in their fundraising and community outreach. She was a member of the Children’s Hospital Guild on the Island and played an important part in creating the Mercer Island phone book for over 30 years.
Mrs. Hawkes was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Robert C. Hawkes. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Jean Thieme Egbert and Susan Hawkes Spencer; son and daughter-in-law, Steven C. Hawkes and Sherri; son, David I. Hawkes; son and partner, Curtis F. Hawkes and C. David Bartley; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy H. Steere and John; and four grandchildren, Julie H. Stewart, Rebecca L. Hawkes, Kevin C. Steere and Elizabeth K. Steere.
A celebration of Mrs. Hawkes’ life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Bellevue Athletic Club, 11200 S.E. 6th St., Bellevue, 98004.
