Martha Kane

Martha “Marty” Kane

October 29, 1926 – June 2, 2013

Marty passed away peacefully on June 2, 2013 after a very long journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

Marty was born and raised in Kalamazoo, MI. She was the oldest of three children born to Ralph and Ruth Fast. She attended State High School and went on to Smith College where she graduated with a teaching degree. She taught at several private schools including Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills, MI and Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI before she landed in Seattle where she taught at The Bush School.

Marty met her husband Bob on a blind date and they were married in 1957. Marty and Bob were loyal Husky Football fans and loved the games as much as their legendary E12 tailgates with the Van Gang! When not rooting on the Dawgs she could be seen, and heard, cheering on her kids and their friends in their different activities earning her the moniker “The Queen Mother”. Her other interests included reading, traveling – especially to Mexico, bridge, cooking and entertaining. There was nothing she enjoyed more than finding a fun new recipe to cook or to have Bob try on his BBQ. Marty was a member of the Colonial Dames and very proud of her Mayflower lineage.

Marty was preceded in death by her husband Bob in 1996. She is survived by her daughter Mary Bray and son Jay (Chris) Kane and her three beloved grandchildren, Ally Bray, Griffin and Olivia Kane. Marty leaves her two younger brothers Philip (Helga) Fast of Boise, ID and Stephen Fast of Pacific Palisades, CA and her sister-in-law Marjorie Buchanan of Woodinville, as well as many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

The family is forever grateful for the amazing love and care shown to Marty through the years, especially over the past five years by the caregivers at the Nov Adult Family Home on Mercer Island. A private graveside service and celebration of her life is planned at a later date. Remembrances to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
