Early in the morning of July 12, 2022, Mary Ross passed away peacefully at age 97. During her last hours, Mary was comforted by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James.
Mary enlisted in the Navy Nurse Cadet program, during WWII, and graduated with her RN from St. Luke’s Hospital, in Kansas City. She served as a Navy Nurse for the duration of the war. Mary proudly maintained her nursing licensure and volunteered for a variety of community activities while raising her family. After Jim’s unexpected passing, Mary returned to clinical nursing for 30 years in the emergency rooms at Harborview and Group Health Hospitals. After retirement, Mary continued her interest in nursing by providing clinical support for many University of Washington Medical School research projects.
Mary joined the Covenant Shores community in 1997. She cherished her Covenant Shores friends and other long-term friendships. Mary was an active resident regarded with affection and respect for her many acts of kindness and inclusion. She created a welcoming program to assist new residents and visited each new neighbor with a basket of coffee, tea, or a bag of chocolate candies. In addition, she initiated and maintained the Sunflower Club for all residents moving from Kansas to the Seattle area. The members met monthly to enjoy a potluck dinner and friendship. Even though her advancing age caused some physical limitations, Mary continued her favorite activities of sewing, visiting, decorating for all holidays, and watch- ing sports, particularly Husky football, University of Kansas Jayhawk basketball, and Seattle Mariners baseball.
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary will be mourned by many, remembered by even more, and never forgotten.
A special acknowledgement and thank you to the kind, gentle, and responsive care providers at Covenant Living at the Shores.
