Melissa (Sally) Lou Looff
August 21, 1927 – March 3, 2016
Sally was born in Cosmopolis and raised in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Franklin High School and attended the University of Washington. While working at Washington Mutual Bank she met and married Dorrell Looff. Their first home was on Mercer Island which was brought over from Bremerton on a barge to the Roanoke Landing in 1948. Sally and Dorrell had three daughters and six grandchildren, all born and raised on the Island.
In the early days, Sally helped start the MI Preschool Association with Nin Elliott, was involved with the Children’s Orthopedic Guild, and was the contact person for Mountain Rescue calls (calling members and making sandwiches for the next rescue).
Sally began her real estate career on Mercer Island in 1960 and continued to work for over 45 years. She loved real estate, playing bridge, dancing, skiing and traveling. More than anything, Sally loved making Sunday dinners for her kids and grandkids where there were lively discussions about politics and sports. We learned to sing, dance, and root for the Mariners and Seahawks from this fun and vivacious lady. She was known as Baca to her grandchildren and neighborhood kids. She never missed a play, graduation, soccer, baseball, basketball, football game or cross country meet. She orchestrated time for all of us to attend games, plays and travel as one big group. We are so sad to say goodbye, but we do so knowing she had the very best life any of us could ask for. She was surrounded always by love – by those she loved and who loved her. For a lifetime of love and great memories we thank Mom, Baca, Sally for this legacy.
Husband Dorrell Looff preceded Sally in death in 1981. Sally is survived by daughters and grandchildren – Susan Gilbertson (Ann and Greg Haggart), Nancy Jensen (Heather and Matt Newton, Bill and Janel Jensen), Katie and David Anderson (Rod, Jeff, John Anderson). Seven great-grandchildren – Aidan, Sierra, Zoe, Julian, Charley, Finley and Quinn. Nieces – Laurel, Jane, Sherrie and Sandy.
Private family services were held on March 7, 2016 at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
We are forever grateful to Anda and Claudiu who were her caregivers her last year. She adored them.
