Nancy Lee Jones Beard

Nancy Lee Jones Beard passed away with family by her side on May 8, 2010 at her home in Wilsonville, Oregon.Nancy was born in Greenville, Texas January 18, 1922 to Agnes Scarborough Jones and Cliff A. Jones Sr. She had a wonderful childhood growing up with her two brothers and one sister and their family pet, ‘Pat’ the cow. Nancy was a Greenville High School band sweetheart and later was a fashion model. Nancy graduated from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas with a degree in Nutrition and became a dietician for Magnolia Petroleum Company in Dallas, Texas. It was there she met Dr. Charles Beard who was working as a research scientist for the same company. “Chuck” and Nancy married 1948 and were married for 43 years until his death in 1992. Nancy and Chuck moved to Mercer Island the first time in 1962 where Nancy stayed busy as a homemaker and raising her two sons and being active in charitable organizations including the Mercer Island Orthopedic Guild. She was an expert bridge player and enjoyed playing the game with her beloved circle of friends. She and Chuck visited Europe several times and enjoyed recounting her experiences traveling. After moving to Northern Virginia in 1971, she had a successful career as a real estate agent. Nancy and Chuck returned to enjoy their retirement on the Island in 1982. Nancy was thrilled to rejoin her Mercer Island friends, whom she considered one of her greatest treasures. She was active in several community groups and joined the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. She loved the Mercer Island community and lived in her home on SE 58TH Street before moving to the Portland area to be closer to her children and grandchild in 2004. A private family burial was held in Sewickley, PA.Nancy is survived by her two sons, Dr. Charles Beard of Saline, Michigan and Bill Beard of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and by one grandson named Paul Beard of Eugene, Oregon. She is also survived by her brother Cliff A. Jones of Dallas, Texas and by several nieces and nephews.
