OLIVE DAVIS OSWALD
October 7, 1922 – January 17, 2011
Olive Davis Oswald was born in Oak Park, Illinois to Forrest Guy Davis and Harriet Maibauer Davis. At the age of five, Olive joined her parents, brother Bill and sisters Harriet and Jerry, in a seven-seat Cadillac for a move to Seattle. After several years in the city, the family moved to large acreage in Silverdale with beachfront on Puget Sound. Olive graduated from Silverdale High School in 1940. After two years at Washington State University, she later transferred to the University of Washington to complete a degree in International Studies. She made lifetime friendships through her involvement with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married the love of her life, Hugo E. Oswald Jr. in 1949 at a lakefront home on Lake Washington. Hugo and Olive celebrated their 61st anniversary this past summer. Together they raised four children on Mercer Island – Susan, Scott, Steve and Stuart. Olive enjoyed a rich life filled with family and friends. She had a variety of interests including the Betsey Wilson Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Arboretum Group, the Republican Party, tennis, boating on the Narwahl and extensive world travel (over 70 countries). Olive participated as a member of the Sunset Club, Mercer Island County Club, Seattle Tennis Club and Rainier Club. As a longtime member of the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church and active student in Bible Study Fellowship, her faith sustained and encouraged her daily. Olive will be remembered for her gracious ways, warm smile, compassionate heart, generous spirit, patient listening and kindness to all who crossed her path. Olive was a loving wife to Hugo and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grand-mother. She taught us all well how to live life with faith, dignity, honor, grace, gratitude and joy. Olive is survived by her devoted husband, Hugo, their children Susan (married to Chuck Duby), Stuart (married to Jennie), Steve and Phyllis (widow to their late son, Scott and married to Lodie Rogers), their grandchildren Krista, Peter, Brooke, Forrest, Spencer, Blake, Brady, Ben and Janie, as well as great-grandchildren Jack and Sam. Remembrances may be sent to a charity of your choice.
