Dorothea A. “Beanie” Robertson
Dorothea A. “Beanie” Robertson, passed away as she lived, quietly, with dignity and grace on February 21, 2010. She was born on November 28, 1914, to O.Walker and Erna Allen in Excelsior Springs, MO. The family moved to Kansas City, MO. where Beanie graduated from high school and subsequently worked at the Hallmark Card Company writing verse. In 1937 at the behest of her manager at Hallmark, she and two friends drove to Los Angeles, CA and settled in an apartment in Hollywood again working for Hallmark. A bold adventure for young ladies in those days! She worked during the war years at McDonald–Douglas as an Accounts Receivable clerk. After the war she met her husband to be, W.A.”Bud” Robertson. In 1949 they were married at the home of close friends in Seattle, moving there to begin their lifelong commitment to each other. Beanie worked for the D.K. McDonald Company until the birth of their son, Rob, in 1954. They built their house on Mercer Island in 1962 where Beanie created a warm and comfortable home for her family for the next 40 years until she moved to Wenatchee in 2002 to be close to her son’s family. As much as she prided herself on her abilities to be a homemaker she also had many diverse interests outside the home. She loved playing golf and bridge until late in her life, always thinking she’d get out to “hit a few” up until quite recently. In 1976 she and a group of friends started a successful investment club which thrived until she and the other remaining member dissolved it in 2001. For fun she would solve daily crossword puzzles and math word problems. When she relocated to Wenatchee she and her daughter-in-law, Janie, had the fun project of completely renovating and redecorating her condominium. She was an avid Husky fan traveling with her husband to many away games. Later, she would champion the Seahawks. Beanie was always a charming and generous individual, impeccably groomed and ahead of the latest fashions trends. She had a quick and sharp sense of humor enjoyed by everyone who knew her. Beanie devoted time, energy and passion to many charitable organizations. If children were the beneficiaries she was for it and for years the Ruth Dykeman Children’s Center was an organization for which she raised money. She was a consummate and proud homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Family and friends were blessed to be a part of her life. Beanies kind spirit shone through to everyone, and she always thought the best of everyone, making them feel special and valued.She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bud Robertson, her parents and siblings. She will be deeply missed by her son Rob, daughter-in-law Janie, grandchildren A.J. and Evan, sister-in-law Marjorie Allen of Lee’s Summit MO, nieces and nephews and family friend Alden Petit. A Memorial Service will be held at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, Saturday, March 13, 2010, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruth Dykeman Childrens Center 1033 SW 152nd St. Seattle, WA 989166 (rdcc.org).
