Roy R. Vetto, MD
Roy Vetto, 84, a Mercer Island resident since 1958, died May 17, 2010 of complications from pneumonia. Roy was born on January 23, 1926 in Spokane, WA to Anthony and Amelia Vetto. He was a graduate of Gonzaga Prep, Gonzaga University, and Jefferson Medical College. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Roy completed his surgical residency at the University of Washington and practiced as a general, thoracic, and vascular surgeon at Group Health Cooperative for 30 years. He enjoyed photography, sailing, skiing, and golf. Despite losing his vision, Roy remained an avid reader with the aid of recorded books and never lost his insatiable appetite for learning. Roy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ellen; children Paul (Susan), Joan Papasedero (Don), Peter, Susan, Lisa, Christie Holbrook (Jamie), Joe (Shannon), and Matt (Mandana); grandchildren Andrew and Natalie Vetto, Maria and Toni Papasedero, Peter Woolley, Tessa Vetto, Nick and Sam Holbrook, Riley and Siena Vetto; and great grandson Tyson Woolley. He is also survived by his brother R. Mark Vetto, MD (Marianne) and family of Portland, OR. A funeral mass was held at St. Monica Parish, Mercer Island on May 21. Roy’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Group Health/Overlake Hospital ICU physicians and staff for their skillful and compassionate care.
