June 11, 2021, Thomas Francis Heywood of Mercer Island peacefully passed away at the age of 76. Tom was born in Washington D.C on November 21, 1944 to James W. & Mary (Smith) Heywood. He graduated from Tempe High School and received degrees from both Arizona State University & University of Arizona during which time he married Cheryl Cypert in 1967. He is preceded in death by his second wife Jaclin Heywood (married 1986) and is survived by BJ Martindale, his loving partner for the last several years.
Tom worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco before moving to Mercer Island where he found a career at Boeing retiring after 26 years. Tom was active in local and international humanitarian efforts, loved singing in the church choir, playing tennis, exploring the world through travel and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by three siblings – James R. Heywood (Mimi) of Oracle, AZ, Maryann Clarke of Westminster, CO, and Tirzah Heywood of Tempe, AZ; three children – Karen Stevenson (Dennis) of Chandler, AZ, Nancy Heywood (Jason Valdez) of Issaquah, WA, and John Heywood (Shannon Stangler) of Rochester, MN; two stepchildren – Craig Davidson (Cathy) of Gig Harbor, WA and Chailee Davidson of Sioux Falls, SD; and nine grandchildren – Hannah & Tressa Stevenson, Mia, Ben, Braden & Libby Heywood and Kaeli, Alex & Ally Davidson.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 26th at Evergreen Covenant Church, Mercer Island (formerly Mercer Island Covenant Church)
