William C. Dolowy, D.V.M., P.S. of Mercer Island, WA. died June 12th, 2011 in Seattle, WA. Dr. Dolowy was born January 13th, 1927 in Chicago Heights, Ill. to William and Sophie Dolowy. He attended Bloom High School and was drafted into the Navy in 1945 where he was an electronics technician. After leaving the Navy Dr. Dolowy attended Thornton Junior College. He continued his education at the University of Illinois earning his B.S. in Chemistry, M.S. in Zoology and D.V.M. (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine). Dr. Dolowy began his career as a full-time research scientist working as Administrator at the Animal Research Hospital and Medical Center Laboratory at the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago from 1954 – 1967. While in Chicago, he was Consultant in Pathology at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Pathology. Veterinary Consultant, Mount Sinai Medical Research Foundation and Consultant, Hines VA Hospital. Additionally, he was Senior Member, Center for Zoogoses Research, University of Illinois. In Chicago he was Consultant, Research VA Hospital. Consultant, Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge and Illinois State Psychiatric Institute. In 1967 Dr. Dolowy became Professor and Chairman and of Experimental Animal Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle. He had additional part-time positions as Senior Biologist at the Pacific Northwest Research Foundation and Director at the Northwest Institute for Animal Studies, c/o Woodland Park Zoological Garden. In 1974 Dr. Dolowy returned to Illinois for a few years where he was a microbiologist at GS-13/2 Hines Veterans Hospital, Hines, IL, a Professor at Chicago Medical School, Dept. of Microbiology and adjunct Professor in Microbiology and Surgery at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL. He owned and operated Dolowy Animal Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was a Consultant at the Chicago Medical School, Department of Microbiology. In 1976 Dr. Dolowy went into private practice opening Animal Care Hospital on Mercer Island where he worked until his retirement in 2001. During his years of research Dr. Dolowy made significant discoveries which have proved to be of great value. He was the first to show that the use of L-aspariginase caused remission of leukemia in children. According to statistics, prior to his discovery only 3% of children diagnosed with leukemia survived. Today, with the use of L-aspariginase up to 95% of children survive the disease. The drug is still the main drug used to treat childhood leukemia. Dr. Dolowy’s research was extensive and included mammary tumor studies. Dr. Dolowy produced multiple publications in Scientific Journals. Dr. Dolowy had a continuous weekly 30-minute radio show from 1961-1965 broadcasting from 11 stations. He also was the host and moderator of a weekly medical television series on NBC for 4 years from 1964 through 1967. Dr. Dolowy gave numerous speeches and seminars over the years. He has been honored in Who’s Who in America, was inducted in the Bloom High School Hall of Fame and was awarded ‘Veterinarian of the Year’ in 1988 by the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association. His work is preserved at the Smithsonian Institute in the permanent medical collection. Some of Dr. Dolowy’s organizational appointments have included: Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Illinois Society for Medical Research – Director, on the Board of Directors and member of the Executive Committee, Association of American Medical Colleges – member of the Animal Care Committee and later Chairman, Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and member of the Legislative Committee, National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources – member of the Quarantine Facilities Committee and Laboratory Animal Facilities, Diplomat of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, Member of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association, member of the Executive Committee, School of Medicine, University of Washington, Member of the American Society of Microbiology, Member if the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, Member of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association, Member of the Seattle Veterinary Medical Association, Member of the American Association for Cancer Research, Chairman and Research Committee Member – Seattle Zoological Society, Member – Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, Member – American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners. Dr. Dolowy’s is remembered by his family as a kind and caring person. To his wife Joan he was her beloved husband and best friend. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dr. Dolowy and his wife Joan loved to travel to the Canadian Rockies, Tofino, BC, the Oregon Coast, and Hawaii. They loved to explore Washington and Canada. Dr. Dolowy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan of Mercer Island, WA, their daughter Cynthia Dolowy of Chehalis, WA, his beloved grandchildren: Jade, Josiah, Kodiak and Kiowa Dolowy, Tiffany Pickering and Forrest Malcolm; great-grandchildren Jessie, Amelia and Leo. Dr. Dolowy was preceded in death by his daughter Elizabeth, granddaughter Ivy and other loving relatives.
