An ode to summer

Although summer doesn't officially end until Sept. 21, a new school year is right around the corner, thus bringing an end to what has been a terrific season.

Although summer doesn’t officially end until Sept. 21, a new school year is right around the corner, thus bringing an end to what has been a terrific season.

The most memorable aspect, if you like hot weather, has to be the warm temperatures. Only two of the 30 days between July 24 and Aug. 22 were less than 70 degrees, with the majority of those days above 80 degrees. The sun enhanced most outdoor experiences, from walks in the parks to community events to swimming to scanning the skies for the Blue Angels. Many community events, such as Summer Celebration, were sponsored by the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department. Residents flocked to Mostly Music in the Park and the outdoor movies at Mercerdale Park. Department workers also made sure that our parks and swimming beaches were clean and safe for Islanders to use. The staff deserves a round of applause and a much deserved break.

The Fourth of July came and went without any major accidents with fireworks this year. Though loud with the roar of the hydroplanes on Lake Washington and the Blue Angels overhead, Seafair went without a hitch. Island swimmers had spirited meets at Midlakes. The co-ed softball team, the Rockers, won another title.

Through Mercer Island Youth and Family Services , Island youth broadened their horizons and helped others through programs such as the Volunteer Outreach in Communities Everywhere program (VOICE). Island Books held a party in Mercerdale Park to herald the release of the latest Harry Potter book. Traffic managed to flow despite the new construction throughout our downtown. School sports teams are already on the fields, and classes will start soon — Tuesday, Sept. 6 — as will fall, bringing with it clouds and rain. Let’s celebrate the summer one last time.
