On May 9, a beautiful day for washing cars, the Mercer Island High School marching band worked tirelessly to rid hundreds of Mercer Island vehicles of their grease and grime. Where did all the suds and dirty car wash water go? Not into the Lake Washington waters that surround our Island! Thanks to the City of Mercer Island and its maintenance team, the band was able to hold an environmentally friendly car wash with minimal pollution impact to our Island. An exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable city crew diverted the water away from stormwater drains which go directly to the lake, to sewer drains and permeable ground. Not only were we able to raise the remaining funds for new band uniforms, but it felt great that the students could do it in an ecologically responsible way. Kudos to the City of Mercer Island for partnering with MIHS in this successful effort! (And thank you to the community for coming out and supporting our band!)
