Katie Metzger’s March 23 Reporter article highlighted the debate going on over the Island parklands initiative.
Some have questioned the initiative’s worthiness. For instance, City Councilmember Dan Grausz, in his personal capacity, and others have urged various individuals and entities, “Don’t sign the petition” to put the parklands initiative on the ballot.
Perhaps in the heat of the moment on the parklands issue, we have forgotten that the democratic process works. Signing a petition to put an initiative on a ballot, just as candidates for office put their names on a ballot, allows voters to make a choice at election time. A majority then determines the outcome. Let’s encourage a democratic process be followed by putting the parklands initiative on the ballot and accept the majority vote.
