The Bellevue Wolverine’s boys lacrosse team won their first Division I state title in 18 years after beating Mercer Island 8-7 in overtime.

The teams battled through all four quarters, ending regulation tied at 7 for the four minute over time period.

The Islanders scored first in the game, but Bellevue held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first 12 minutes. The game was tied up at 4 points a piece at the end of the first half, giving both teams just 24 minutes to try and win it outright.

Mercer Island went on a scoring run in the third, upping the score to 6-4 at the end of the third quarter. An Islander goal with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter would be the last Mercer Island goal of the night.

Bellevue tied the game with 26 seconds left in the game and Mercer Island was issued a one minute penalty for an equipment violation at the beginning of the overtime period.

With less than two minutes to play in the sudden death overtime, Bellevue found a way past Mercer Island goalie Hap Giraud, as the ball bounced in and back out to give the Wolverine’s the win.

Mercer Island ended the season with a 19-1 record, while Bellevue was 17-3.
