Best bets to catch an MI state tourney appearance

State tournaments continue and kick-off this week with a host of Mercer Island students taking part. Here’s a breakdown of when and where to catch the Islanders this week.

Wednesday, May 27

The 3A state golf tournament begins at the Meadow Springs Country Club and Horn Rapids Golf Club in Richland, Wash. The boys are represented by lone MIHS qualifier Charlie Kern, while the girls team has a record five participants. Lindsay Chinn, Haley Chinn, Alana Brooks, Sarah Peterson and Chelsee Saelee will represent the girls.

The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team looks to make a state finals appearance if they can best Curtis. The semifinal game will take place at 7 p.m. at the MIHS stadium.

Thursday, May 28

3A State track meet begins at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The team, including returning state champion pole vaulter Bryce Borer, is represented by 16 athletes. The boys pole vault begins at 4:30 p.m.

Friday, May 29

The 3A state track meet continues in Tacoma. Running and field event preliminaries and finals will take place throughout the day.

The 3A boys soccer state semifinals find No. 1 Mercer Island taking on No. 2 Shorecrest in the battle for a spot in the state championship game. Neither team has allowed a goal this season and Islander goalie Forrest Marowitz looks to continue the streak at 2 p.m. at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

The 3A tennis tournament begins at the Vancouver Tennis Center in Vancouver, Wash. Mercer Island, represented by 10 athletes, looks for a top finish in the girls doubles and singles.

Saturday, May 30

The tennis tournament and track competitions wrap up with event finals and award ceremonies. The boys soccer team with either play at in the third/fourth place game at Harry Lang Stadium at 1 p.m. to advance to the state championship game in the same location at 5 p.m. depending on the outcome of Friday’s game. The boys lacrosse team, if the team beats Curtis, would advance to the 7:30 p.m. state finals at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
