Ed Pepple, the former Mercer Island boys basketball coach, who has the most wins in high school boy basketball history, will be among 12 individuals inducted in the National Federation of State High School Association National High School Hall of Fame.
Pepple will be inducted on July 10 in San Diego at the 28th Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. He spent 42 years coaching at MIHS, finishing his career with an 882-237 record with the Islanders. He won four state titles, and finished second three times and helped teams to 23 league championships. Pepple coached for seven years at Fife High School and Longview’s Mark Morris High School. His overall record over 49 years was 952-306.
He’s already been inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Washington Intescholastics Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, WIAA Association Hall of Fame and the Puget Sound Hall of Fame.
Fifth grade girls lacrosse team takes first at Sammamish event
The fifth grade Mercer Island team, MI-5, finished in first place at the fifth annual Sammamish 3-on-3 Lacrosse shoot out on July 3, after winning four Lightning Division games. The team, consisting of Allie Myers, Sophie Finch, Tessa Guerra, Maeve Akins and Claire Underwood, are all going into the fifth grade at Island Park Elementary.
Unlike other lacrosse tournaments, the Sammamish Shootout is “Chumash” style lacrosse in which players shoot on a goal that is 6 feet high and 1 foot wide.
Three from Mercer Island Judo Dojo take second at state games
The Mercer Island Judo Dojo club participated in the third annual Subway Washington state Games for Judo in Burlington, Wash. on June 19.
Masahito Kemmotsu took second place in the 11-12 year old middleweight division. Lance Cote also finished in second place in the 7-8 year old lightweight division, while brother Sean Cote finished second in the 9-10 year old lightweight division.
