The Mercer Island High School football team lost its fourth consecutive game Friday night, 35-12, at Issaquah High School.
The Eagles took it to the Islanders from the opening kickoff.
Issaquah drove the field and scored on a six-yard run for a 7-0 lead. A 60-yard touchdown pass on the team’s next possession put Mercer Island behind by two scores.
The Islanders finally got on the board when sophomore Carson Kilburn scooped up an Issaquah fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. But the blocked extra point resulted in the lead only being cut by six points.
Grant Gellatly, who ran over and through the Mercer Island defense, scored again on the Eagles’ next drive and added his third touchdown two possessions later.
Issaquah completed its scoring with a three-yard touchdown run to open the fourth period. Mercer Island earned one more touchdown as sophomore Treston Donovan returned the next kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. But the Eagles would stop the two-point conversion attempt and end all hopes of more Mercer Island points.
Mercer Island fans will have something to cheer for this week as the Islanders host Liberty during all-Island band night at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The game will also be the final home appearance for the seniors on the team and all will be recognized for their contribution to the football program.
