Islander girls advance in district tournament, beat Cleveland 53-45

The Mercer Island girls basketball team advanced to the third round of the district playoffs Friday with a 53-45 victory against Cleveland at Bellevue Community College.

The Islanders held a 16-point lead at the end of the third period. But Mercer Island let that lead slip away during the fourth quarter as they scored just three points during the first six minutes. Cleveland only got as close as 47-41 before Islander Kate DaPron scored six consecutive points to put the game away.

The Islanders were led by Janelle Chow, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and DaPron, who posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Islanders will play Holy Names during the semifinals of the district playoffs at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Bellevue Community College.
