Islander Keathley Pinney Brown recently placed third in her age division of USA Climbing’s Division 1 Youth Sport and Speed Climbing competition, which took place June 18 and 19 in Bend, Oregon.

Competing against climbers from Washington, Alaska and Oregon, Brown finished third out of 18 athletes in her category. With the top six finishers moving on, Brown advanced to compete in the national championships, which will be July 14-17 in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Brown, who will begin her sophomore year at Mercer Island High School this fall, is a member of the Seattle Climbing Team, which is sponsored by the Seattle Bouldering Project.

Brown qualified for the national championships in two disciplines: bouldering and sport climbing. In February, she competed in the bouldering national championships in Madison, Wisconsin, finishing 31st out of 52 climbers.
