Islander volleyball just misses state spot

Mercer Island’s volleyball squad went 1-2 in the 3A District 2 tournament and fell one win short of qualifying for the state tournament on Saturday.

The locals (11-10 overall, 8-7 in league) lost to Eastside Catholic, 3-1, to finish their season at Chief Sealth High. Eastside Catholic won, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 30-28.

“This was the most easy going group of athletes I’ve ever coached, and every day, they strived to improve just a little bit more. By the end of the season, they were a completely different team and grew so much individually and collectively. The group all genuinely adored being around one another on and off the court and played unselfishly,” coach Carmen Vasilatos said.
