MIHS finishes even at the top with Interlake at districts.

In windy and rainy conditions, Mercer Island tied with Interlake for the boys golf 3A district championship on Oct. 25 at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent.

Following 18 holes of action, both teams stood at the top of the team standings with scores of 302. Bellevue was next with 303, followed by O’Dea with 313 and Roosevelt with 314. All five teams advance to the 3A state tournament on May 24-25 in Spokane at a course to be determined.

Mercer Island, which won the KingCo title on Oct. 14, was led by Spencer Smith and Wonjoon Seo with 74s, followed by Evan Otte and Elliott Hoang with 77s and Ethan Evans with an 83. Evans birdied the 18th hole to give the Islanders the tie.

The top four scores went into the final tally and the tiebreaker was the fifth score. Since both teams’ fifth score was 83, the tournament ended in a tie.

* Washington Golf named Evans its junior boys player of the year. He is the first Mercer Island High School golfer ever to be awarded this prestigious honor. Evans won the Washington Junior Golf Association Boys State Championship and finished runner-up at the Pacific Northwest Junior Boys Amateur.
