The Mercer Island Islanders girls and boys track teams performed well in a double-dual meet against the Lake Washington Kangaroos and Sammamish Totems on March 21. The Islanders girls track squad earned a 98-86 win against Lake Washington and a 134-45 triumph against Sammamish.
The Mercer Island Islanders boys track team defeated Sammamish 126-47 but lost to Lake Washington 139-34. Ashley Rudd, Maya Virdell, Kayla Lee and Maggie Baker were members of the winning girls 800-meter relay squad with a time of 1:48.34. Virdell, Lee and Baker are pictured in the above photo. Islanders girls athletes earning first place in their respective events consisted of Chloe Michaels (1600 meters, 3200 meters), Lee (200 meters, 1600-meter relay), Baker (400 meters, 1600-meter relay), Rudd (300 hurdles, 400-meter relay), Virdell (400-meter relay), Eliza Crenshaw (400-meter relay), Katie McCormick (400-meter relay), Ella Hensey (1600-meter relay, long jump), Gretchen Blohm (1600-meter relay) and Faith Osei-Tutu (shot-put). Islanders’ boys athletes capturing first place in their respective events were Alexander Benson (3200 meters), Jack Clayville (110 hurdles) and Jeffery Tian (pole vault).
