Meade wins Mercer Island soccer’s Steve Newman Spirit award

Anyone watching a Mercer Island soccer match may have noted midfielder Mitchell Meade, whose sheer determination, grit and talent helped propel the Islanders boys soccer team to the Class 3A state playoffs this year.

Meade, who just completed his senior season, will head to Dartmouth this fall. Meade stood out to his coaches and was awarded the Steve Newman Spirit award.

The award, which has been doled out the past five years, is given to a member of the team who embodies former Mercer Island boys soccer head coach Steve Newman’s spirit, love for soccer and community values. Newman was the coach of the program for almost 20 seasons.

“Mitchell loves soccer, is an extremely hard worker and never gives up,” Mercer Island head coach Colin Rigby said. “He is a talented soccer player and always wants the best for his team. Mitchell’s speed is amazing and while not the tallest on the field, with his determination he typically comes out with the header. He loves the sport with all of his heart and we are proud to announce him as this year’s winner.”

Meade was thrilled to win the coveted honor.

“Winning the Steve Newman award is humbling and truly an honor. I was shocked to win this award especially amongst such a great group of players. It means so much to me because soccer has been such a significant part of my life and the soccer community on Mercer Island is very special,” Meade said.
