The Mercer Island boys basketball team started off the season 1-0 against KingCo opponents when they beat Mount Si by 20 points last Friday.
The Islanders took down the Wildcats with a 62-42 win at MIHS in the first game of the regular season.
Mercer Island scored double digits in every quarter of the night, as their defense held off Mount Si to under 10 points a quarter under the final minutes of the game.
Senior Kaj Sherman lead the team with 12 points during the win, while Derek Newhof had 10 points. Sam Cohen posted nine, Brian Miller had seven overall all, with Jeff Lindquist adding six, Evan Thompson five and both Sean Hughes and Quinn Sterling posting four points a piece. Ben Emanuels had three points and Reid Jackson and one basket.
Earlier in the evening the girls also played Mount Si, losing 58-44 to the Lady Wildcats.
Mount Si opened the game leading by one point at the end of the first quarter, before going on a run in the second to extend their lead to 31-26 at the half. The Islanders held them off during the third, almost taking the lead, but an 18 point fourth quarter for Mount Si left the Wildcats in charge.
Jae Shin led the team with 15 points during the game, while Kris Brackmann stocked up 10 points, followed by Sarah Taylor and Christina Williamson’s six a piece. Senior captain Hailey Gullstad had three points, Carly Andersen had two and Caroline Carfi had two.
The girls team travels to play Archbishop Murphy on Monday night for a 7 p.m. game, while the boys will play at Sammamish on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
