The Mercer Island girls water polo team placed sixth at the 2016 state tournament, which took place May 26-28 at Curtis High School in University Place.

The Mercer Island girls water polo team placed sixth at the 2016 state tournament, which took place May 26-28 at Curtis High School in University Place.

The Islanders fell to state runner-up Curtis High 17-3 in the opening round before overcoming Enumclaw with a 5-4 overtime win on May 27. Enumclaw led Mercer Island 4-1 at the half and 4-2 going into the final period, when the Islanders rallied with the final three goals of the contest to pull out the victory.

Mercer Island lost its final two tournament games, losing to Bellevue 5-2 and Puyallup 9-5, both on May 28.

Jacqui Li and Davis Simmons earned all-state honorable mention at the tournament.
