Members of the 2016 Mercer Island High School boys varsity golf team capped a summer trip to Scotland by winning the American High School Golf Championships at St. Andrews, which took place July 9 through 16.
The team, along with head coach Tyson Peters, took part in the eight-day trip as part of a travel abroad program. The team stayed on the University of St. Andrews campus, toured the town and did a historical walking tour of the old St. Andrews golf course. Commonly referred to as the “Home of Golf,” the old golf course is one of the world’s most famous. The team also attended the British Open as part of the week-long experience.
Peters called the excursion a “dream trip.”
“It was more than just a competition; it was really an amazing travel experience,” he said.
The Mercer Island golfers competed against state championship teams from across the country, coming out with the top team score to win the tournament. MIHS 2016 grad Zach Evens also won the individual trophy, shooting 4-over-par through three days of competition.
The event marked the last competitive high school tournament for the seven attending players.
“It was really a nice way to go out, being able to take the trip with them and to also win the tournament,” Peters said. “You couldn’t have dreamt of a better ending.”
