Mercer Island native and Eastside Catholic graduate Matt Boyd was named a Pac-12 Player of the Week for Feb. 18-24.

Mercer Island native and Eastside Catholic graduate Matt Boyd was named a Pac-12 Player of the Week for Feb. 18-24.

Boyd, a pitcher, helped Oregon State defeat San Diego State 2-0. He pitched for 8 1/3 innings, striking out a career-high nine batters in the Beavers win. Boyd allows five hits and batters reached third base just once during his time on the mound. It was Boyd’s fourth start of his career. The team, which won all five games that week, are 8-0 this season, the team’s best start since 1962.

Boyd leads OSU with 13 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings this season, with opponents hitting .196 off him. It is his first Pac-12 pitcher of the week honor.
