The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team won it’s last two games of the regular season last week and began the state tournament this week.
The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team traveled to Tacoma on Wednesday, May 15, winning 10-3 over Tahoma.
Mercer Island was up 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, adding four more points to hold a 7-2 lead at halftime.
After the break, the Islanders scored three more goals in the second half, while holding Tahoma to just one point.
Steen Swedstedt scored three goals with one ground ball, while Peter Mahony added two goals and an assist. Hayden Reisman scored one goal, added two assists and two ground balls during the win, as teammate Devlin Conway posted one goal and had nine ground balls in the match. Justin Rorem scored one goal, as did Grant Preisler and Cooper Johnson. Goalie Benji Rothenberg recorded four saves, while Scott Lee added one save.
Friday, May 17 the team took on Eastlake, beating the Wolves 13-4.
The Islanders were up 6-1 at the end if the first quarter, followed by another four goals in the second quarter for a 10-1 lead at halftime. After the break, Mercer Island scored three goals in the second half, as did Eastlake.
Swedstedt had another team high in the game with three goals, three assists and one ground ball, while Reisman had two goals and one assist. Mahony scored two goals, as did Charlie Vetter. Grant Preisler scored one goal in the match, along with Rorem, Johnson and Evan Condon. Rothenberg made two saves during the game, while Lee posted one.
The Islanders finished the regular season in second place in the King West Conference, boasting a 17-3-0 record. Mercer Island will begin the playoffs on Tuesday, May 21 against Lakeside. The game will be played at Mercer Island at 7 p.m.
If Mercer Island wins on Tuesday, the team will play Issaquah in the state quarterfinals on Thursday, May 23 at Issaquah High School in a 7:30 p.m. game.
