Islander Kayla Lee made it to the medal stand at the Junior Olympic national championships, which took place July 25 through July 31 in Sacramento.
Lee placed seventh overall in the girls 15-16 400 meter event with a time of 56.4. Placing in the top eight, Lee earned All-American recognition. She set a personal record in the 400 meter semifinal, placing second in her heat with a time of 55.44.
Lee also competed in the 200 meters. She advanced to the semifinal round, where she placed 15th with a time of 25.15.
Also competing at the Junior Olympic nationals were 14-year-olds Ellie Bailey and Maya Virdell. Bailey placed 38th in the girls 13-14 400 meter prelims, finishing with a time of 1:02.19.
Virdell helped both her 4×100 and 4×400 meter relay teams place 23rd in each respective event’s preliminary rounds. Virdell and teammates Jacquelyn Bostock, Sherifat Sanusi and Avery Patterson finished the 4×100 with a time of 51.79 and the 4×400 with a time of 4:20.1.
