Mercer Island High School’s boys golf team placed third at the 3A Sea-King district tournament on Oct. 24 and earned a spot at the state competition next May.
The 12-team, six-plus-hour tournament consisted of squads from the best of 3A KingCo and the 3A Seattle Metro League and took place at Druids Glen Golf Course in Covington amid rainy, windy and cold conditions.
Automatically advancing to state are: Bishop Blanchet (first, 303 points), Roosevelt (second, 305), Mercer Island (third, 306) and Bellevue (fourth, 307). Depending on how the spring results shake out in other school districts, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association may add one or two 3A Sea-King teams and individuals to the state lineup.
Scores for Mercer Island team-wise: Wonjoon Seo (74), Evan Otte (76), Elliott Hoang (77), Spencer Smith (79) and Wooje Chung (87).
Individually, Islander Brian Murdoch led the 24-player pack with a 76 and also qualified for state.
Overall, Seo tied for fourth and Otte and Murdoch tied for sixth.
