The Northwest Yeshiva High School volleyball team finished their season, just two games shy of the state volleyball tournament. The 613s, who had just seven players on the roster this fall and no seniors, lost in the district tournament while looking for a second consecutive state bid.
During the first game of the tournament, held at Cresent High School, the team lost to Mt. Rainier Lutheran, before beating Shorewood Christian. The 613s then faced Neah Bay in a loser out, winner to state game. After splitting the first two games of the match, an injury to Ilana Polack gave Neah Bay an opening to take the fourth game for a 3-1 win.
“With an active roster of just seven and no seniors, Yeshiva took what was supposed to be a rebuilding year and transformed itself into a winning team that was highly competitive, a team that earned the respect of all opponents,” said Yeshiva Athletic Director Jed Davis. “That all has to do with Drew Artiaga and his assistant Tiffany Shen. The mark of a great coach comes when that coaches graduates a significant number of top seniors, as he did in the fall of 2009. It is what he does with the new team the following year that shows true greatness. The tradition of excellence that had been the trademark of Yeshiva volleyball continued without a blip.”
The team will return everyone from this season to the court next fall.
